Random Super Thoughts

So, I watched the "Big Game" last night. I don't want to refer to it as its legal name and incur the wrath of the National Football League. It was an entertaining game. A close first half. Few penalties. A surprise kick to start the second half and a huge interception to seal the deal.

New Orleans' coach Peyton made the bold choice of on sides kick to start the second half and it worked out for him. If the Colts had recovered it, people would be calling him an idiot instead of applauding his bold play calling. It could have easily gone either way.

The commercials? Pretty dull overall. Way too many lame Doritos commercials. the only one I halfway enjoyed was the one where a Dorito is used as a throwing star. The Go Daddy ones have overstayed their welcome. It was nice to see the Chicgo Bears but the "shuffle" spot was too short and I can imagine all the fathers around the US having to explain to their grown children what the commercial is supposed to be a parody of.

It made me miss Walter Payton. 20+ years later, I still remember his lines from the "The Super Bowl Shuffle"--They call me sweetness, and I like to dance, running the ball, is like making romance. I believe they must have composed their own parts of the song. Where was The Fridge?

My favorite moment of the whole event though, came after the actual game was over. The camera zoomed in on Drew Brees holding his infant son. The little boy was decked out in a little Saints jersey and happily taking in the confetti and sights. Brees himself, clearly was very emotional at sharing the moment with his young son and his eyes were glassy with tears. It was the best shot of the night.

Heroes Con in 2 weeks!

June 19th through 21st is HeroesCon here in Charlotte, NC. Tin Star Studios will be sharing some booth space with Space Monkey Comics. Booth assignments have been made and we're in booth 232.
We're on the end of the hall close to the concession stand and on the fringe of the artist alley area.
I'll have copies on hand of Furious Fist of the Drunken Monkey, including the new TPB collection. I'll have all four issues of When Drive-Ins Attack! plus a handful of copies of Blister #1, making its debut at the show. Sketch Cards on Parade

So, I went to a local show and my friend Buddy Prince had some sketch cards on hand. Buddy is a true master when coming up with new products to sell and finding innovative ways to market his artwork. Buddy will sketch you out an original artwork magnet if you want. He recently got some gigs doing sketch card inserts for trading card sets and he also had on hand some blank sketch cards. He gave me a big handful and I started doodling on them there at the show. I sold a Wolverine card that day. When I got home, I kept pounding out more sketch cards and I joined a web site that Buddy told me about where collectors could see me work.
Since that show, about 6 weeks ago, just about the only thing I've drawn has been personal sketch cards and the commission work has started to roll in. I've sold several cards and the customers are coming back for more. Working in the 2.5X3.5 inch space presents its own challenges and it's been fun. I really should post more but I have been very busy the past few weeks making a push to wrap up the ""When Drive-Ins Attack!" book by the end of 2008. I came up a week or two short but as of today all of the interior artwork is complete through the coloring stage. Crafty Kel Nuttall is hard at work adding lettering to the remaining pages as I type.
The book clocks in around 100 pages. I sat down today and figured that I wrote roughly 20% of the book. I illustrated roughly 25% of it and colored about 50% of it. That's why the project has taken so long to reach completion. My original vision involved far more people submitting completed stories, but alas it wasn't to be.

So, what's next? The book still needs a cover image. Once the lettered pages are all compiled and in order, I'll put together an Adobe PDF file of the book and start shopping it around. Meanwhile, I might tackle some additional chores and try to ink the penciled story written by Kel. It would be great to have it in the book, but so far it has been one of the stories that fell victim to incomplete work.

For the summer, I want to put together the first issue of my coming anthology title "Blister". I have a cover and a finished story but I need at least a couple more shorts to round it out. Anyone out there have a finished short story 6-8 pages in length that is horror/sci fi/action related?? If so, contact me at the email addy listed on the right side of the page.

I have a one shot called "Poisonberry" that is 1/3 done. I need to wrap that one up. It was a casualty of the WDA project and is long overdue for completion.

Look for a one-shot comic for my WDA story "The Pack". I plan to publish the story in its entirety and include additional pages that would be two alternate endings. Like a special edition DVD to keep the movie theme going.

Last, I need to get some new Drunken Monkey material together. I'd love to have a new Monkey book on hand for the summer.

Charlotte Comic-Con this weekend

Monster Con

This weekend I'll be appearing at MonsterCon in Concord, NC. This is a two day event at the Cabarrus County Events Center (at Old Airport Road and Hwy 49). They're going to have comics creators, some movie folks (like guys who've played Jason and Michael Myers), and a big concert on Saturday night. Also gaming, costume contests, and trivia contests.

I'm only there on Saturday, so come out and say hello.

This is a promotional trailer for the "When Drive-Ins Attack!" anthology that will be wrapping up soon. I think it turned out pretty good considering I was working with the standard Windows Movie Maker program that came loaded on my desktop. It would have been great to include some publisher information in the video, but the book hasn't been shopped around yet. I'm waiting to have it 100% completed before going the submission route.
The rockin' theme music was graciously provided by Wolfgang Parker, from his album "Room Nineteen". The song and album are available through iTunes and Amazon as well.

For several months, my primary comics work has been in regards to putting together an anthology book entitled "When Drive-Ins Attck!". The book contains story and art inspired by classic B movie fare. Drive-In and grindhouse suitable material. The guideline for stories was "beasts, boobs, blood, and blazing guns". Not every story contains all of those elements but there is a healthy mix.
The book is about 90% done. A few more pages to color. A handful to pencil and ink. Most of the book is already layed out and complete through the lettering phase. This one should be all wrapped up by the end of the year.

This blog page was created in order to provide an easily maintained and accessible web presence for Tin Star Studios. Tin Star is the imprint for comic projects by Rich Stahnke (that's me). My future works will bear the Tin Star name and emblem on them. I first used the name and emblem on my 2007 Furious Fist of the Drunken Monkey convention special. People at conventions are always asking if I have a web site and I've been answering "no" or directing them to my MySpace page. MySpace is an ad riddled overly gadgetized mess now and I find it a chore to check on that site or maintain it. This seemed to be the best answer for me.

I don't have time to build or maintain a fancy web site, so this will have to do for now. I'll be posting images and previews of upcoming work here, so stay tuned.
